In short

Reishis is the beginning that is also the foremost: a starting point that carries importance in its own right as well as order. Rashi's comment on the Torah's first word and the Netziv's reading of terumah both rest on that importance. The authorities differ over how absolute a beginning it is. For Malbim it need not be part of a counted sequence at all; for the Vilna Gaon it is the first of a series, without denying that something preceded the series. Rishon is first in a counted series. Techilah is the onset; on Malbim's account it marks that a thing did not exist before, without tying itself to what follows. Kedem is before, and in space east.

Distinctions

Reishis (ראשית) and rishon (ראשון)

The classical lexicographers take ר-א-ש as the root, giving rosh, rishon and reishis together. Rosh is the head anatomically and the head of a nation, tribe or unit; it also marks the opening of an expected series, Rosh Chodesh (Bamidbar 10:10, 28:11) and Rosh HaShanah (Yechezkel 40:1).

  • Menachem Ibn Saruk (Machberes Menachem): rosh can also mean a count or tally, especially of people (Shemos 30:12; Bamidbar 31:49; Tehillim 139:17; Iyov 22:12).
  • Rav Hirsch (to Shemos 30:12) reads that differently: rosh there is not the individuals counted but the final total, since as the head unites the body's parts, the number gathers all the units under one head.

Rosh also means poison (Devarim 29:17, 32:32-33; Iyov 20:16; Eichah 3:19, and more); Rav Hirsch (to Devarim 29:17) holds it can come from both the plant and the animal kingdom, some read it as snake venom from the snake's rosh (Targum and Rashi to Yirmiyahu 8:14), and others take it as a poisonous plant, Rabbi Shlomo Pappenheim explaining that the plant in question has a round top that looks like a head.

Rabbi Klein offers his own account, doubly hedged, of how these senses hang together: the anatomical head is perhaps the central sense, the head controls the body and so lends its name to anything in a controlling position, such positions usually go to prominent people and so rosh comes to mean important, and since the head normally emerges first at birth rosh also comes to mean first. The two then converge, since what is important might be listed or done first.

Rabbi Shlomo Pappenheim treats the middle aleph as extraneous and takes the root as the biliteral reish-shin. Indeed, rishon is once spelled with a yud (Iyov 8:8) and reishis once with neither aleph nor yud (Devarim 11:12), and Aramaic has reish (thirteen times in the Aramaic of Daniel; reish galusa, reish mesivta, Reish Lakish), where Biblical Aramaic still spells it with an aleph like the Hebrew rosh and later Aramaic replaces that aleph with a yud. Under that biliteral Rabbi Pappenheim gathers yerushah (the heir becomes the head of the estate), tirosh (new wine, foremost in quality and at the start of its existence), rishayon/reshus (authority), reshes (a net, by which a hunter gains mastery over an animal), rosheh (weak, easily subjugated), and rash (destitute, so browbeaten that anything rules him).

Reishis carries importance as well as order. The Netziv (Meromei Sadeh to Chullin 136b) uses this to resolve the Tosafists' difficulty. Terumah is called reishis (Bamidbar 15:20-21; Devarim 18:4) and the Gemara derives that one may not consecrate his whole crop, since a remnant must stay ordinary; yet reishis hagez (Devarim 18:4) carries no such requirement. The Netziv: in terumah, reishis means importance, so the tithe is taken from the choicest produce of the field, and importance is relative, so something must be left unimportant beside it; in the shearing, reishis means only first in succession, so the mitzvah falls on the first batch of wool with no bar to giving all of it. Rabbi Klein adds, as his own point, that saying a thing comes first does not require that something come after it, and finds it in "I am rishon and I am last, and besides Me there is no god" (Yeshayahu 44:6): being first does not posit a second. Rashi (to Bereishis 1:1) reads b'reishis for that valued sense, expounding it of the Torah and of Klal Yisrael, each called reishis elsewhere (Mishlei 8:22; Yirmiyahu 2:3, where Klal Yisrael has terumah-like status and whoever "eats" of them bears the guilt). Targum Yerushalmi renders b'reishis as created with wisdom. Rabbi Shlomo Pappenheim adds that rishon can be spatial as well as temporal: Yaakov set the maidservants and their children rishonah, in front, and Leah and Rachel behind (Bereishis 33:2).

Techilah (תחילה)

Thirteen appearances in Tanach counting its inflections, by Even-Shoshan's concordance, the opening act of a sequence: "the techilas of Hashem's speaking to Hoshea" (Hoshea 1:2). In the very comment to Bereishis 1:1 that asks why the Torah opens with creation rather than with the first mitzvos, Rashi's own verb for beginning the Torah is lehaschil, a cognate. Root: ח-ל-ל triliterally (Ibn Janach, Radak) or the biliteral ח-ל (Menachem Ibn Saruk). Rabbi Shlomo Pappenheim, on the biliteral, reads that root as circularity and encirclement, so techilah is the moment a process enters its natural cycle and begins to run. The halachic lechatchilah belongs here: lamed plus kaf plus techilah, the ideal way to perform a mitzvah from the outset, before any bedieved circumstance arises.

Reishis against techilah

Both mean "the beginning," and one pair of pesukim states the same idea with each: "the reishis of wisdom is fear of Hashem" (Tehillim 111:10) against "the techilas of wisdom is fear of Hashem" (Mishlei 9:10).

  • Maharal (Nesivos Olam, Nesiv Yiras Hashem ch. 1): Shlomo HaMelech's techilah makes yiras Hashem and wisdom inseparable, one continuum, as the Mishnah has it, no yirah without wisdom and no wisdom without yirah (Avos 3:17); this serves his agenda in Mishlei of elevating wisdom. David HaMelech's reishis instead marks yiras Hashem as the important element and the goal of wisdom, without which wisdom has no worth.
  • Rabbi Zev Hoberman, on the Vilna Gaon to Mishlei 9:10: reishis is strictly what is chronologically first, while techilah can name what comes later in time but was the intended goal from the outset. David HaMelech, who worked all his life for wisdom, taught that one must pursue yirah first; Shlomo HaMelech, given wisdom as a gift, taught not that yirah must precede it in time but that it must be the aim from the start.
  • Malbim (Sefer HaCarmel): rishon is the opening position in a countable sequence, defined against the items after it; reishis is an absolute or primal beginning, not necessarily part of a sequence, important in itself and encompassing all that follows, which is why creation is b'reishis; techilah negates a prior time without implying any tie to what follows. Malbim adds that creation is called reishis rather than techilah because it marks the origin of time itself; Rabbi Klein reports this and then adds that he is not quite sure how it adds up.
  • The Vilna Gaon (to Yeshayahu 1:26), on "I will restore your judges as at the rishonah and your counselors as at the techilah": a reishis-word for the judges because David and Shlomo were not the first judges, only the foremost of a series; a techilah-word for the counselors because Moshe and Aharon were the absolute first the nation ever had. The Midrash as we have it (Yalkut Shimoni to Yeshayahu 391) reads the two the other way round, judges as Moshe and Aharon and counselors as David and Shlomo.

Rabbi Shlomo Pappenheim's Yerios Shlomo opens with thirteen pages on this distinction.

Kedem (קדם)

Targum Onkelos renders b'reishis as b'kadmin. Kodem is "before" in time, with the family mukdam (early), kadmon and kadmoniyos (ancient, antiquities), hakdamah (introduction), k'dam (the English prefix "pre-"), kidomes (prefix), takdim (precedent, an occurrence the like of which has happened before), mikdamah (advance payment), and in Modern Hebrew kidum (advancement, progress). The term, Rabbi Klein writes, denotes the future becoming the present. Spatially, kedem and kadimah are east, the direction the sun rises from and therefore what comes first. The Aramaic kaman, l'kaman and kamma (as in Bava Kamma) come from the same root with the dalet dropped, the loss marked by the dagesh in the mem; Rabbi Shaul Goldman notes that this dropping seemingly happened in the post-Tannaitic period, since it is absent from Biblical Aramaic, Targum Onkelos and Targum Yonasan and present in Amoraic works (Pesikta, Yerushalmi, Bavli). Rabbi Shlomo Pappenheim suggests that ק-ד-ם derives from the biliteral kuf-dalet, reading kedem with kodkod, head or skull; Rabbi Klein observes that this parallels rosh meaning both head and beginning.

Sefer HaShorashim

ח-ל-ל

חָלָל, one slain, and to slay; to begin; to profane, with חֹל, the common; חָלִיל, a hollow instrument of music, and מָחוֹל, the dance; hollows, and חַלּוֹן, a window.

The slain

(Shmuel I 31:1), they fell slain, and (Eichah 4:9), better the slain of the sword than the slain of hunger. In the intensive the verb is to kill, and he glosses מְחֻלְלֵי חֶרֶב (Yechezkel 32:26) as those killed by the sword.

Beginning

(Devarim 2:25), this day I begin to put your dread. The noun is תְּחִלָּה, as תְּחִלַּת חָכְמָה יִרְאַת י"י (Mishlei 9:10), the beginning of wisdom is the fear of Hashem.

Profaning

(Malachi 2:11), for Yehudah has profaned. (Devarim 20:6) he explains as one who planted a vineyard and has not made it chullin, since it is holy until he redeems it. (Bamidbar 30:3) is of this sense too: he shall not make his word chullin, but his word shall stand, as if he had declared it holy. The noun is חֹל, as וּלְהַבְדִּיל בֵּין הַקֹּדֶשׁ וּבֵין הַחֹל (Vayikra 10:10), to distinguish between the holy and the common. חָלִילָה, far be it, is of the sense of profaning too, he says, which stands in place of holiness.

The flute and the dance

(Melachim I 1:40), piping upon flutes. The instrument is the חָלִיל, one of the instruments of music. Rabbeinu Shlomo says it is what they call קלמי"ל [ קרמל"ש ] in the vernacular, and the חָלִיל is called so because it is hollow; Yonasan renders it צֶלְצְלִין, cymbals. From this too מָחוֹל, the dance, is named, because they make merry within it with flutes.

Hollow places

(Yeshayahu 2:19), hollows dug under the earth after the manner of caves; and חַלּוֹן, a window, as חַלּוֹן הַתֵּבָה (Bereishis 8:6), the window of the ark.

Slain within; my being slain

The entry opens with (Tehillim 109:22), my heart has been slain within me, which he reads as a past verb, as though it said נחלל, it has been slain. (Tehillim 77:11), and I said, it is my being slain, he has the navi speaking out of galus: my being slain is my death and my being killed in the length of this galus, but I shall remember the years of the right hand of the Most High, the years when the Most High roused His right hand and brought us out of the galus of Mitzrayim, and so He will rouse it again to bring us out of the galus we are in.

The calling in Enosh's day

(Bereishis 4:26): he explains that in the days of Enosh men strayed after avodah zarah, and then the calling by the Name of Hashem was profaned. Some explain the word from beginning instead, that men then began to call the names of idols and images by the Name of Hashem.

The profaned woman

(Vayikra 21:7), a woman who is a zonah or profaned, is the adjective from this sense. (Yechezkel 21:30) may belong here, he says, or with the first sense, the slain; Targum Yonasan renders it as one liable to death, wicked one.

A common road

(Shmuel I 21:6), and it is a common way: he explains that though we went out on a common errand and did not suppose we would need holy bread, the young men's vessels were holy, for we purified ourselves on setting out. (Shmuel I 21:7), and the kohen gave him holy bread, is the todah loaves, which a Yisrael may eat in purity, the only other bread there being the lechem hapanim, which is forbidden to those outside the kehunah. His father explains the pasuk the same way.

Holding back the rain

(Mishlei 25:23) under this sense: the north wind holds back the rain, תְּחוֹלֵל being תמניע, from the sense of חָלִילָה, which is a sense of holding back. Radak notes that he has already written on it at the root חול.

To go before, which he holds takes in coming before someone to meet him; קֶדֶם, of old, and the east, as the west is called behind; and קָדִים, the east wind.

Ancient time

(Yeshayahu 23:7), from days of old, and (Devarim 33:15), and from the top of the ancient mountains; with the adjective, מְשַׁל הַקַּדְמֹנִי (Shmuel I 24:13 in his edition), the proverb of the ancients, and בְּיָמִים קַדְמוֹנִים (Yechezkel 38:17), in former days. Another pattern of the noun is תָּשֹׁבְןָ לְקַדְמָתָן (Yechezkel 16:55), they will return to their former state.

Going before, and presenting oneself

(Yonah 4:2), therefore I went ahead and fled to Tarshish, and (Devarim 23:5), that they did not come before you with bread and water: all of them are ענין הקדמה, going before, and the sense is known. Rabbi Yonah divides them into two senses; Radak holds there is no need, for (Tehillim 17:13) means, present Yourself before him in Your wrath and fury and bring him down, and so (Tehillim 21:4), for You come before him with blessings of good, and the like; and presenting oneself is going before. In that pasuk בִּרְכוֹת is בברכות, with blessings, for the verb is intransitive.

The east is קדם, the west behind

The eastern quarter is called קדם, as the western, opposite it, is called אָחוֹר, behind: גַּן־בְּעֵדֶן מִקֶּדֶם (Bereishis 2:8), a garden in Eden, to the east, and (Iyov 23:8), behold, I go east. (Shemos 27:13), eastward, toward the sunrise, is doubled to make it plain, since מזרח is the clearer and better known word; so too נֶגְבָּה תֵימָֽנָה (Shemos 26:18), southward, to the south. (Yechezkel 47:8), to the eastern region: הקדמונה is המזרחית, the eastern. The east wind is called קָדִים, as וְרוּחַ הַקָּדִים (Shemos 10:13), and the east wind, and He set the east wind moving in the heavens; as for what it says there, וַיְנַהֵג בְּעֻזּוֹ תֵימָֽן, and by His strength He drove the south wind, the wind may have been from the south-east. The eastern sea is הַיָּם הַקַּדְמֹנִי (Yoel 2:20).

ר-א-ש

The head. Also the top of a hill, a sum, the principal of a debt, and the beginning or first; and, the head being the body's choicest part, the choicest and the chief.

The head, and heads

אֶת־ הָרֹאשׁ (Vayikra 1:8), the head, and רֹאשִׁי רֹאשִׁי (Melachim II 4:19), my head, my head, of which he says only that it is known. (Tehillim 7:17), his mischief returns on his own head. (Eichah 3:5) he reads as He compassed my head, and with weariness He compassed me; some take the word there as in רֹאשׁ וְלַֽעֲנָֽה (Devarim 29:17), gall and wormwood; and he says he will write of it again under its own root. (Bereishis 2:10), and it became four heads, he says that things divided out of one are called ראשים, each being a head to itself once they have parted, a usage he says is known in other tongues too; Rabbi Yonah made them great rivers, and Radak holds there is no need for that. (Shemos 30:12), when you take the head of the children of Yisrael, is their sum, and (Bamidbar 6:9), and he defiles the head of his nezirus, is the hair of the head of his nezirus.

The top of the hill

(Shmuel II 15:32), and David was coming to the top, is the top of the hill where David used to bow and daven, and so Targum Yonasan renders it, עַד רֵישׁ טוּרַיָא, to the top of the mountains. It is said to be Har HaZeisim, from which he could look at the Beis HaMikdash, which would be what the pasuk means by David going up the ascent of the olives. On that view, though the Beis HaMikdash did not stand then, and its own place was not yet known, Har HaMoriah was known by tradition; which spot on it was not known until Gad told David to build a mizbeach at the threshing floor of Aravnah the Yevusi.

The choicest, and the chief

Because the head is the choicest part of the body, the word is used of the pick of men and their chief, and of the best of the spices: בְּשָׂמִים רֹאשׁ (Shemos 30:23), which he reads as take spices, and of them take the chief and choicest. So too רֵאשִׁית שְׁמָנִים יִמְשָׁחוּ (Amos 6:6), they anoint themselves with the choicest of oils. (Bamidbar 24:20), Amalek is the reishis of the nations, he reads as the Targum renders it; Rabbi Yonah reads it as the greatest and most considerable of them. Radak adds that רֵאשִׁית הַחֵרֶם (Shmuel I 15:21), the reishis of the devoted spoil, may be of the same kind, the choicest of it.

How the word is written

With the plural suffix the cholam turns to kamatz, רָֽאשֵׁיכֶם שִׁבְטֵיכֶם (Devarim 29:9), your heads, your tribes, and it also comes with the cholam, (Yeshayahu 15:2), on all its heads baldness. Some books write וַֽחֲבָלִים בְּרֹאשֵׁנוּ (Melachim I 20:31), and ropes on our heads, full, with the yud of the plural, and the Mesorah there has two, one full and one defective; other books have it defective, and the Mesorah there has two and both defective, counting דָּמוֹ בְרֹאשֵׁנוּ (Yehoshua 2:19), his blood on our heads, and Rabbi Yonah too wrote that both are defective. The alef shows itself in מַרְֽאֲשׁוֹתֵיכֶם (Yirmiyahu 13:18), which Radak glosses as your greatness; in אֲשֶׁר־שָׂם מְרַֽאֲשֹׁתָיו (Bereishis 28:18), which he had set under his head, as he glosses the word; and מֵרַֽאֲשֹׁתֵי שָׁאוּל (Shmuel I 26:12), from by Shaul's head, comes without the added mem, for its mem is the one that means from, as its tzere shows.

The beginning

(Yechezkel 36:11) he reads as I will make your end better than your beginning. (Vayikra 5:24), and he shall repay it in its ראש: the principal of a thing is called its ראש, capital in the vernacular, because it is the head and beginning of the thing and the profit comes upon it afterwards. (Tehillim 119:160), the beginning of Your word is truth. (Zechariah 4:7), and he shall bring out the head stone, describes the stone set first for the foundation, over which they would raise shouts of joy and say, grace, grace be to it. (Bamidbar 2:9), at the first they shall travel; (Bereishis 10:10), the beginning of his kingdom was Bavel. (Bereishis 1:1), he says, is not in the construct, and reads: at the first Hashem created the heavens and the earth, and after that what came out of them, and only then does the Torah tell that at the beginning of the earth's making it was tohu vavohu.

First in rank, first in time

(Esther 1:14), who sat first, is first in standing, near the king, and so (Daniel 10:13), Michael, one of the first princes, is one of the great in rank. (Yechezkel 29:17), in the first, on the first of the month, is Nisan, the first of the months; but (Shemos 12:15), but on the first day you shall put away leaven, he reads as the day before it, the fourteenth, which comes before the seven days of matzah; and so (Iyov 15:7) he reads as were you born before Adam. The first day in Shemos can also be read plainly, that on the first day the leaven be already put away, as with (Bereishis 2:2), and Hashem finished on the seventh day. (Yechezkel 40:1), at the head of the year, on the tenth of the month, he takes as the seventh month, which is the head of the year, on its tenth, Yom Kippur; Chazal (Arachin 12a) take the tenth day itself to be called Rosh Hashanah and the year to have been a yovel, for which year has its Rosh Hashanah on the tenth if not the yovel. (Koheles 7:8), good is the end of a thing from its beginning, his father explains that the end of a thing is good when a man looks from its beginning to see what its end will be, or else that the good lies in the end, as Chazal say (Avos 2:1) of the man who sees what is to be born.
