names of Yaakov
At a glance
In short
Yaakov, Yisrael and Yeshurun are three names for one man. The Torah seems to use the first two almost interchangeably, but the commentators distinguish them. For the Maharal and Rav Hirsch, among others, Yaakov is the man as an individual and Yisrael the man as founder of the nation; for the Ohr HaChaim, Yaakov is the man in a low moment and Yisrael the man at peace. Yisrael was an added name, not a replacement (Rabbeinu Bachya). Yeshurun is rare, four times in all Tanach. The Ramban builds it on yashar, straight, a title of praise that answers Esav's charge that Yaakov means crooked dealing; Rabbeinu Bachya takes it instead from shur, to gaze, and the Vilna Gaon from shir, song.
Distinctions
Yaakov (יעקב)
Bereishis 25:26: named for the akeiv, Esav's heel, which he held at birth. Bereishis 27:36 records Esav's counter-reading, that the name comes from ע-ק-ב in the sense of supplanting or deceit; that slur, for the Ramban, is what the third name answers.
Noam Elimelech (to Shemos 19:3): Yaakov is the mass of the people, Yisrael its men of standing.
Chasam Sofer (Toras Moshe, Vayechi, third piece): the name Yaakov speaks of pain, the name Yisrael of greatness.
Yisrael (ישראל)
Bereishis 32:29, the angel of Esav at the Yabok: he "lords" (sar) over angels (elohim, or el for short) and over men, confirmed by Hashem Himself at Bereishis 35:10. Rabbeinu Bachya: the earlier name was not withdrawn, so Yisrael is an addition and both remain in force.
From the Midrash (Bereishis Rabbah 63:3), Rabbi Yitzchak of Pira, the Rashba's student (to Bereishis 17:5, 21:3), writes that Yisrael is also a name of Yitzchak and of Avraham.
Yeshurun (ישורון)
Devarim 32:15, 33:5 and 33:26, and Yeshayahu 44:2. Yoma 73b: the Kohen Gadol's choshen bore the names of the three Avos, the twelve shevatim, and the words shivtei Yeshurun; the Chasam Sofer there restricts that to Aharon's choshen, holding that later ones read shivtei Yisrael.
Maharal (Tiferes Yisrael ch. 11): Yeshurun speaks of Yaakov as the perfect mean, balancing the chessed of Avraham and the gevurah of Yitzchak.
Chemdas HaChemdah (to Devarim 32:15) derives Yeshurun from seeing, which sharpens Moshe's rebuke: they saw all the miracles Hashem did for them and would still choose other gods. At Devarim 33:5 and 33:26 the same work relates it to yashar, straight, used of Hashem's bond with the people to hint that He is with them only while they act uprightly.
Chasam Sofer (Toras Moshe to Devarim 33:4): Yeshurun is the highest level, those who hold the Torah as their king, the source of wisdom and understanding; Yaakov the lowest, who keep the mitzvos only as an inheritance from their fathers; Yisrael the middle, sometimes loyal to the Torah and sometimes not, who need the gathered heads of the nation to rebuke and rouse them.
Where the authorities disagree
When the Torah says Yaakov and when Yisrael.
- Many commentators, among them the Maharal and Rav Hirsch: the name marks the frame, Yaakov for the individual and Yisrael for the man in his role as father of the nation.
- Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk: the two names stand for two avenues of avodah, Yaakov for yiras Hashem and Yisrael for ahavas Hashem.
- The Ohr HaChaim works through the pesukim systematically and finds a different rule: Yaakov wherever the Torah shows him downcast or in distress, Yisrael wherever he is at peace and content.
- Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk elsewhere (Noam Elimelech to Shemos 19:3): Yaakov is the mass of the people, Yisrael its men of standing.
- Chasam Sofer (Toras Moshe, Vayechi): the name Yaakov speaks of pain, Yisrael of greatness.
What Yeshurun means.
- Ramban (to Bamidbar 23:10, Devarim 2:10 and 7:12): yashar, straight, given precisely to counter Esav's claim (Bereishis 27:36) that Yaakov comes from ע-ק-ב in its other sense of trickery; Michah 7:20 pairs Yaakov with truth.
- A tradition preserved in Arugas HaBosem of Rabbi Avraham ben Ezriel, Peirush HaRokeach to the Siddur, and Eitz Yosef of Rabbi Chanoch Zundel of Bialystok reads it as yashar v'naeh, straight and fine, the two phrases matching in gematria when Yeshurun is spelled with two vavs.
- Rabbeinu Bachya: from shur, to gaze, since they came nearest to gazing on the Shechinah at Har Sinai.
- The Vilna Gaon: from shir, song, for the shirah at the Sea.
- Rabbi Yaakov Tzvi Mecklenburg: from shirah as a name of the Torah (Devarim 31:19), since they alone accepted it.
- Chemdas HaChemdah (to Devarim 32:15): from seeing, which sharpens Moshe's rebuke, since they saw every miracle and would still choose other gods; at 33:5 and 33:26 the same work takes it from yashar, Hashem being with them only while they act uprightly.
- Maharal (Tiferes Yisrael ch. 11): Yaakov as the perfect mean, balancing the chessed of Avraham and the gevurah of Yitzchak.
Whether Yeshurun is a name of the Jewish People at all. The Maharsha holds that Yeshurun is a Name of Hashem, and ascribes the view to Rashi. Rabbi Yechezkel Landau (Noda BiYehudah Tinyana, Orach Chaim §126) works out what the Maharsha meant; Rabbi Nosson Kamenetsky devoted an exhaustive essay to the question. One place where Yeshurun clearly names Yaakov is the pre-Shacharis passage that calls the Jewish People "the congregation of Your firstborn son Yaakov, whom from Your love that You loved him and from Your happiness that You were happy with him, You called his name Yisrael and Yeshurun," whose earliest source is Tanna DeVei Eliyahu (Seder Eliyahu Rabbah ch. 21).
Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk notes that apart from that prayer the Jews are almost never called Yeshurun in the liturgy, the exception being the Yom Kippur wording, "Forgiver of Israel and Pardoner of the Tribes of Yeshurun in all generations." He accounts for the doubled expression by taking "Forgiver of Israel" of sins between man and Hashem, typified by the Eigel, and "Pardoner of the Tribes of Yeshurun" of sins between man and his fellow, typified by the brothers' sale of Yosef.
Which name stands highest.
- The Zohar ranks them: Yisrael above Yaakov (Vayechi 222a), and Yeshurun above Yisrael (Vayishlach 177b).
- The Chasam Sofer (to Yoma 73b), explaining why later breastplates read shivtei Yisrael rather than shivtei Yeshurun, says that Yisrael is yashar plus El, a high level reached with Divine help, while Yeshurun describes a people inherently straight, at their peak through their own effort.
- Megaleh Amukos of Rabbi Nosson Nota Shapiro maps the three onto the Arizal's worlds by the shape of the suffixes, angels of Beriah ending in -el and those of Yetzirah in -on/-ron: Yaakov in Asiyah, Yisrael in Beriah, Yeshurun in Yetzirah.
- Chasam Sofer (Toras Moshe to Devarim 33:4): Yeshurun is the highest, those who hold the Torah as their king; Yaakov the lowest, who keep the mitzvos as an inheritance from their fathers; Yisrael between, sometimes loyal and sometimes not.

Radak on these roots
Sefer HaShorashim
י-ש-ר
Straight, and right in one's eyes; the upright, יְשָׁרִים; uprightness, יֹֽשֶׁר; level ground, מִישׁוֹר; and the verb, to make straight.
Straight in a man's eyes
(Yirmiyahu 27:5), to whom it was right in My eyes; (Yirmiyahu 18:4), as it was right in the potter's eyes; (Shoftim 14:3), for she is right in my eyes. And of going straight on, וַיִּשַּׁרְנָה הַפָּרוֹת (Shmuel I 6:12), the cows went straight.
The upright rule in the morning
(Tehillim 49:15), the upright shall rule over them in the morning: the upright have rule and greatness over the foolish rich who love this world, of whom it says (Tehillim 49:13), he is likened to the beasts that perish. In this world the fools rule the upright, as (Mishlei 22:7), the rich rules over the poor; in the World to Come the upright are the rulers, and that is morning for them and evening for the rich. The rich wear away in Sheol when they die and leave the dwelling they had; the upright do not, for though the bodily form decays, the form of their soul stands forever.
Uprightness
(Iyov 33:3), my words are the uprightness of my heart. Another form is וְדֹבֵר יְשָׁרִים יֶאֱהָֽב (Mishlei 16:13), he loves one who speaks upright things; it may be formed from the noun in ישר לבי, the uprightness of my heart, with a sheva alone in place of the chataf kamatz that is its rule, to lighten a word heavy to say, as בְּקָרִים, mornings, comes from בֹּקֶר, morning. And another form, וּבְיִשְׁרַת לֵבָב (Melachim I 3:6), and in uprightness of heart.
Level ground
וְהָיָה הֶֽעָקֹב לְמִישׁוֹר (Yeshayahu 40:4), the crooked shall become level ground. (Shir HaShirim 7:10), going to my beloved in straightness, because good wine goes straight and is very pleasant to a man; and so יִתְהַלֵּךְ בְּמֵישָׁרִֽים (Mishlei 23:31), it goes along in straightness.
Making straight
Where the verb takes an object it makes straight: (Yeshayahu 40:3), make a highway straight in the plain; הַֽמְיַשְּׁרִים אֹֽרְחוֹתָֽם (Mishlei 9:15), those who make their paths straight. In another heavy form, with the first root letter sounded against the usual way, (Mishlei 4:25), let your eyelids look straight before you.
ע-ק-ב
Deceit and cunning; the heel, and in the plural, goings; from the heel, the end of a thing, and reward, since reward is the end of the deed.
Deceit and cunning
(Yirmiyahu 17:9), the heart is deceitful above all; (Bereishis 27:36), he has deceived me these two times; and the noun, (Melachim II 10:19), and Yehu acted with cunning. The sense of them all is trickery and cunning. (Yeshayahu 40:4), and the crooked shall become level, the crooked being the winding road that is hard to climb.
עֲקֻבָּה מִדָּם, two readings
The feminine adjective is עֲקֻבָּה מִדָּֽם (Hoshea 6:8), cunning with blood, and so Chazal explain it: שהיו עוקבין להרוג נפשות (Makkos 10a), that they were עוקבין to take lives, which Radak explains as acting craftily. In another place they explain עקבה as מלוכלכת, soiled: Yerushalmi Avodah Zarah 5:7 rules אם יש בו עקבת יין אסור, if there is עקבת יין on it, it is forbidden, and asks what עקבת יין is; the answer is דההוא דמלכלך, that which soils, as it is written עֲקֻבָּה מִדָּֽם, soiled with blood.
The heel, and the goings
(Bereishis 25:26), and his hand holding Esav's heel; (Bereishis 3:15), and you will bruise his heel; (Tehillim 41:10), he has made his heel great over me, as though I were under his foot; and the verb from this, בַּבֶּטֶן עָקַב (Hoshea 12:4), in the womb he took hold of his heel. In the plural the word is goings: (Shir HaShirim 1:8), go out in the goings of the flock, and (Tehillim 77:20), and Your goings were not known, meaning the place of Your goings.
The end
From the heel comes the end, since the heel is the end of the body: (Tehillim 119:112), I have inclined my heart to do Your statutes forever, to the end of the world; וְאֶצְּרֶנָּה עֵֽקֶב (Tehillim 119:33), and I will keep it to the end of the world, meaning all the days of my life; (Bereishis 49:19), and he will raid at the end. From it too comes the verb (Iyov 37:4), and He does not delay them when His voice is heard: He does not put them off to the end, but brings the thunder straight after the lightning.
Reward
Reward too is called עקב, since reward is the end of the deed: וְהָיָה עֵקֶב תִּשְׁמְעוּן (Devarim 7:12), in reward for your listening; (Tehillim 70:4), in reward of their shame they will turn back; (Tehillim 19:12), in keeping them there is great reward; (Bereishis 26:5), in reward for Avraham's listening; and (Bamidbar 14:24), in reward for there being another spirit with him. In the same way reward is called אחרית, the end: כִּי אִם־יֵשׁ אַֽחֲרִית וְתִקְוָתְךָ לֹא תִכָּרֵֽת (Mishlei 23:18), for there is surely a reward, and your hope will not be cut off.
His father on two pesukim
His father explains in the same way: (Tehillim 49:6), why should I fear in the days of evil, when the reward of sin at my end surrounds me? In the days of punishment, the evil reward that is to be mine at my end surrounds me now; if so, why should I fear, since I am receiving the reward of my deeds now. עֲוֹן there is the reward of sin, as in כִּי לֹֽא־שָׁלֵם עֲוֹן הָֽאֱמֹרִי (Bereishis 15:16), for the reward of the Emori's sin is not yet complete. (Yehoshua 8:13), and its heel west of the city, is read as its end; his father takes it from the sense of וַֽיַּעְקְבֵנִי, which the Targum renders וְחַכְּמַנִי, a word of ambush; on that reading, its ambush was west of the city. The Targum renders this pasuk the same way, וְיַת כְּמָנֵיהּ מַעֲרַב לְקַרְתָּא, and its ambush west of the city.
ש-ר-רhis headword שׂרר
To rule and be master; and to make oneself a prince over others.
The whole entry
(Esther 1:22), that every man be master in his own house, and the reflexive (Bamidbar 16:13), that you make yourself a prince over us, a prince indeed. He allows that וַיָּשַׂר אֶל־מַלְאָךְ (Hoshea 12:5), and he was master over an angel, and (Mishlei 8:16), by me princes rule, may belong here, though he has already written of them under the root שֹוֹר; but וַיָּשַׂר בַּמְּגֵרָה (Divrei HaYamim I 20:3), and he sawed them with the saw, and אִם־יִתְגַּדֵּל הַמַּשּׂוֹר (Yeshayahu 10:15), shall the saw vaunt itself, he wrote under נָשַֹר, which he says is truly their root.
Radak’s root
The navel. In another sense, בִּשְׁרִרוּת לִבִּי is the looking of my heart and my thoughts; some explain it as strength.
The navel
(Shir HaShirim 7:3), your navel a round goblet; לֹֽא־כָרַּת שָׁרֵךְ (Yechezkel 16:4), your navel was not cut, where the resh takes a dagesh in place of the doubling that is missing; and in another pattern בִּשְׁרִירֵי בִטְנֽוֹ (Iyov 40:16), in the navel of his belly, the word there being the navel.
The other sense
(Devarim 29:18), for I will go in the looking of my heart, where the sense is the looking of my heart and my thoughts. With it go לְמַעַן שׁוֹרְרָי (Tehillim 5:9), because of those who watch me, and יָשֹׁר עַל־אֲנָשִׁים (Iyov 33:27), he looks upon men, though Radak has written those at the root שׁוּר as well, there being nothing to decide between the two roots. Some explain בִּשְׁרִרוּת as strength, from the sense of שריר וקים, valid and standing, in the words of Chazal (Bava Basra 102a).
