In short

Erusin and kiddushin name the same halachic act, the first of the two stages of marriage: betrothal. After it she is halachically his wife and adultery applies, though the couple may not yet live together. Nissuin, effected by chuppah, is the second stage: marriage proper. Shidduchin is what English calls engagement, an agreement to marry later. Modern Hebrew uses erusin for engagement, but Rav Hirsch (to Shemos 22:15) already makes clear that the Torah's erusin is not that. The Rabbanan Savorai (Kiddushin 2b) derive kiddushin from hekdesh, since betrothal, like consecration, forbids her to all others, and where the two words are contrasted kiddushin carries that sense. Tosafos (to Kiddushin 2b) derive it instead from designating, not consecrating. Erusin, on Rabbi Shalom Mansoura's reading, carries the sense of binding or tying.

Distinctions

Erusin (אירוסין)

The Biblical term (Shemos 22:15, Devarim 20:7, 22:23-27, 28:30). Chazal read morashah in Devarim 33:4 as though me'orasah, betrothed, so that the Torah is betrothed to Klal Yisrael as a wife to her husband (Berachos 57a, Pesachim 49b).

  • Rabbi Shalom Mansoura of Sanna: erusin is an expression of tying. Rabbi Yitzchak Ratzabi gives two ways to take that. Rabbi Baruch HaLevi Epstein reads א-ר-ש as equivalent to א-ר-ז, since sin/samech and zayin interchange, and א-ר-ז is something packed tightly (Yechezkel 27:24; modern Hebrew arizah, a package), and Rabbi Epstein adds that א-ר-ז is related by metathesis to eizor, a tight belt. Alternatively, Rabbi Ratzabi suggests, Rabbi Mansoura may mean a simpler metathesis with no letter replaced: transpose the last two letters and get א-ס-ר, to tie or bind, the betrothed woman being tied to her husband and released only by a get or by his death.
  • Rabbi Yitzchak Vana: arusah is from eres, poison, since one who approaches her illicitly incurs the death penalty as from a snake or scorpion.
  • Another Yemenite scholar cited by Rabbi Ratzabi: arusah as in aris, a sharecropper who holds a partial claim, since the betrothed husband has a partial claim on her (adultery applies) but not a full one (he does not yet inherit her).
  • Rabbi Ratzabi's own two suggestions turn on the interchange of aleph and ayin: ע-ר-ס, to mix (as in arisah, kneaded dough), for the joining of man and wife, or eres, a bed.

Kiddushin (קידושין)

The term of the Mishnah, and the name of the masechta. Kiddushin 2b: the Rabbanan Savorai ask why the Mishnah (Kiddushin 2:1) uses it rather than the Biblical word, and answer that it is from hekdesh, consecrated property: he forbids her to all others as consecration forbids all men to benefit.

  • Rabbi Yitzchak Vana: the parallel to hekdesh is that betrothal, like consecration, raises the severity of the prohibition on one who transgresses with her.
  • Rabbi Alexander Sender Shor and Rabbi Elazar Moshe Horowitz: mid'oraisa the betrothed couple may already live together, and only the rabbinic enactment forbids her to her own husband until nissuin (Kallah 1:1, Rashi to Kesubos 8a); so only after that enactment does she resemble hekdesh, forbidden to everyone including her husband, and that is why the term is the Rabbis' and not the Torah's.
  • The Taz (to Even HaEzer 34:2) holds that the two-stage structure itself confers a kedushah found nowhere else; Rabbi Klein offers, as his own extension of that, the argument that the Rabbis coined kiddushin because they were the ones who instituted the two-step framework, while from the Torah's perspective that added holiness does not yet exist and betrothal is simply erusin, a word implying nothing about holiness.
  • Rabbi Immanuel Chai Ricci (Hon Ashir, introduction to Kiddushin): a man becomes holy by marrying a woman, who saves him from sin, and since every fence against forbidden relations is called kedushah, marriage is called kiddushin.
  • Tosafos (to Kiddushin 2b) read kiddushin differently, from kiddush in the sense of preparing or designating (Shemos 19:10, Bamidbar 11:18); kedeishah, a harlot, is a cognate because she is set aside for a purpose (Rashi to Bereishis 38:21 and Devarim 23:18).
  • Others take kedeishah as related to the Akkadian qadistu, "woman of special status," a definition that fits both a harlot and a wife, which led Professor Shamma Friedman of the Academy of the Hebrew Language to entertain it as a possible etymology for kiddushin itself.

Either way, these approaches hold that kiddushin has nothing to do with holiness or consecration as such. Two supports: Rabbi Aharon HaLevi of Barcelona (Chiddushei HaRa'ah to Kiddushin 2b) and Rabbi Yosef Ibn Ezra (Atzmos Yosef) note that if mekudeshes meant consecrated, the groom would be forbidding her to himself, which he plainly does not intend; and Rabbi Eliezer Ashkenazi notes that consecration would call for mukdeshes, whereas the formula reads mekudeshes, set aside for him. Tosafos (to Kiddushin 7b) rule that one who betroths "half" a woman with the language of kiddushin effects a full betrothal, but one who uses the language of erusin effects only half. Rabbi Klein explains the ruling by what he calls their unspoken logic, the hekdesh paradigm: consecrating half an animal sanctifies all of it, and kiddushin is the term related to hekdesh.

Dr. Michael Satlow suggests that the Mishnaic kiddushin is a loanword from the Greek legal term ekdosis, the bride's father handing the girl over to her new husband. Rabbi Klein calls the proposal fascinating but hard to accept, since handing the bride over is the definition of nissuin (Kesubos 4:5), not of kiddushin; he allows, though, that the Rabbis may have adopted the Greek word and slightly modified its pronunciation and sense, as they often did with foreign words.

Nissuin (נישואין)

The second stage, effected by chuppah, after which the couple live together. Kesubos 4:5 defines it as the father handing the daughter over to the husband. Only after nissuin is the rabbinic prohibition between the betrothed pair lifted.

Shidduchin (שידוכין)

The Talmudic term for what is colloquially called engagement, a couple who have agreed to marry but have not done so.

Radak on these roots

Sefer HaShorashim

א-ר-שhis headword ארשׂ

To betroth; of אֲשֶׁר אֵרַשׂ אִשָּׁה, who has betrothed a woman, and its passive he says only ענינו ידוע, its sense is known.

The whole entry

(Devarim 20:7), who has betrothed a woman and not taken her; and in the passive, (Shemos 22:15), who was not betrothed, and הַֽנַּֽעֲרָ הַמְאֹרָשָׂה (Devarim 22:25), the betrothed girl. Of all of them he says only ענינו ידוע, its sense is known.

Radak’s root

The utterance of the lips: אֲרֶשֶׁת, which he glosses מבטא שפתיו, the utterance of his lips.

The whole entry

(Tehillim 21:3), and the utterance of his lips You did not withhold, which he glosses מבטא שפתיו, the utterance of his lips.

Radak’s root

נ-ש-אhis headword נשׂא

To carry and lift, one sense, he says, through the whole root, with taking close to it; מַשָּׂא, a burden and a prophecy; נָשִׂיא, a great man. Another sense: burning.

One sense, many uses

(Bereishis 13:6), which he glosses as the land not bearing them. Everything that enters this root, he says, enters one sense, carrying and lifting, and it is easy to tell them apart a little, each by its place, so there is no need to set the senses out one by one. Among them are וַיִּשָּׂא עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא (Bereishis 18:2), he lifted his eyes and saw, and (Bereishis 29:1), Yaakov lifted his feet. In marriage it is taking: (Rus 1:4), they took themselves Moabite wives, the sense of carrying, he says, being close to that of taking; and so the Mishnah's בתולה נשאת (Kesubos 1:1), a maiden who is married.

The great man, and the clouds

A great man is called (Shemos 22:27), a great man among your people you shall not curse. The clouds are called נְשִׂיאִים for their rising up, מַעֲלֶה נְשִׂאִים (Tehillim 135:7), He brings up the clouds.

Why showing favour is lifting

(Malachi 2:9), and lifting faces in the Torah, he reads as lifting the faces of the great in the Torah, not rebuking them when they transgress the words of the Torah. Some explain instead that the אֵֽינְכֶם, you do not, said before it stands for two, so that the sense is you do not lift faces in the Torah, but profane it. The noun is וּמַשֹּׂא פָנִים (Divrei HaYamim II 19:7), and lifting of faces. One who sins and is ashamed, he explains, has his face fall, as (Bereishis 4:6), why has your face fallen, and one who shows him a pleasant face is as though lifting up the face that had fallen.

Why forgiving is lifting

(Shemos 10:17), lift my sin, I pray, and (Tehillim 32:1), happy is he whose transgression is lifted. The forgiving of a transgression, he says, is its being lifted and taken off the man.

Why a prophecy is a burden

A prophecy is called מַשָּׂא because it is carried in a man's mouth. Yisrael would say to Yirmiyahu מַה מַשָּׂא (Yirmiyahu 23:33), what is the burden, and the sense of those pesukim, he says, is this: when they asked the navi that, they did not mean prophecy but heaviness and load, as in (Bamidbar 4:15), the burden of the sons of Kehas, the word of Hashem having become a heavy load to them. He who knows what is hidden revealed their thought to the navi, and therefore it says, (Yirmiyahu 23:36), for the burden shall be each man's word: a man's word will be a burden, since the word is carried in his mouth, and that is why prophecy is called מַשָּׂא, while you turn the words of Hashem about and mean heaviness by it.

Burning, another sense

David and his men burned them. So too וְהַמַּשְׂאֵת הֵחֵלָּה (Shoftim 20:40), and the burning began, and (Yirmiyahu 6:1), over Beis HaKerem raise a burning; and (Iyov 32:22), my Maker would soon burn me. As a verb with no object it is burning too: (Nachum 1:5), the earth burns before Him, and so (Iyov 7:13), my bed burns with my complaint. It may be, he suggests, that burning is called so for the flame that rises up; and so the Mishnah (Rosh Hashanah 2:2), משיאין משואות, they kindle fires.

Lifting the voice

(Rus 1:14), they lifted their voice and wept, and (Bereishis 27:38), Esav lifted his voice and wept. (Iyov 21:12) he glosses as raising their voice like the sound of drum and harp, or as pipers raise their voice along with the drum and the harp. (Yeshayahu 37:4), you shall lift up prayer, he reads as lifting the prayer to Hashem, or lifting the voice, or the hands, in prayer; and so (Yeshayahu 42:11), the wilderness and its cities shall lift, is lifting the voice.

Taken up in the mouth

(Bamidbar 23:7), he took up his mashal, which he glosses as bearing the mashal in his mouth, and יִשָּׂא מִדַּבְּרֹתֶיךָ (Devarim 33:3), he shall bear of Your words, that what You commanded him he carries always in his mouth. (Yeshayahu 3:7), he shall lift up on that day, saying, is lifting the Name in an oath. (Shemos 23:1), you shall not take up a false report.

Two readings of נָשׂא אֶשָּׂא

(Hoshea 1:6), for I will surely lift up against them, he explains as I will lift up the enemy against them. Yonasan rendered it אִם יְתוּבוּן מִשְׁבַק אֶשְׁבּוֹק לְהוֹן, if they repent I will surely forgive them.

Written with a samech

Two words written with a samech in place of the sin and a heh in place of the alef belong here: (Iyov 4:2), if a word is lifted up to you, will you be weary, which he has also written under נָסָה; and נְסָה עלינו אור פניך (Tehillim 4:7), lift up upon us the light of Your face.

Loftiness, and atonement

(Iyov 20:6), if his loftiness goes up to the heavens, שִׂיאוֹ being his greatness and his loftiness. The same gloss closes a run that holds (Iyov 13:11), his loftiness will terrify you, and (Iyov 41:17), the mighty dread his loftiness. From this, יֶתֶר שְׂאֵת (Bereishis 49:3) was explained as the excess of greatness and strength that would have been fitting for you had you not gone up on your father's bed. (Bereishis 4:7) he glosses himself: if you better your deeds you will have atonement. His father, of blessed memory, explained יֶתֶר שְׂאֵת (Bereishis 49:3) from this, and read so, the words are a prayer to Hashem that He make the atonement prevail over the sin, and that is the blessing given there.

Raised up, and held up

(Yeshayahu 2:13), the high and the lifted up, and (Yeshayahu 30:25), and on every raised hill. A man lifts himself, מִתְנַשֵּׂא לֵאמֹר (Melachim I 1:5), lifting himself up, saying; others lift him, (Esther 9:3), lifting up the Jews, and (Ezra 1:4), the men of his place shall lift him up; a kingdom is raised, וְתִנַּשֵּׂא מַלְכֻתוֹ (Bamidbar 24:7), and his kingdom shall be lifted up. (Melachim I 9:11), Chiram king of Tzor bore Shlomo up with cedar wood, it is bearing another: Chiram carried him and bore him and provided for him with these things.

The gift, and the offering

The noun for a gift is (Shmuel II 11:8), and the king's gift went out after him; with a tzeirei, אֲרֻחָה וּמַשְׂאֵת (Yirmiyahu 40:5), an allowance and a gift; and the plural, וַיִּשָּׂא מַשְׂאֹת (Bereishis 43:34), he carried gifts. So too the offering to Hashem: (Divrei HaYamim II 24:6), the offering of Moshe, and (Yechezkel 20:40), and the first of your offerings.

The raised mark of tzaraas

שְׂאֵת אוֹ סַפַּחַת (Vayikra 13:2), a שְׂאֵת or a סַפַּחַת, and שְׂאֵת הַמִּכְוָה הִוא (Vayikra 13:28), it is the שְׂאֵת of the burn, may belong with burning, he allows, since the pasuk says צרבת המכוה היא (Vayikra 13:28), it is the searing of the burn, and searing is a matter of burning; but he holds the right view to be the first sense, raising. So Chazal explained in Sifra, on parshas Tazria, perek 1: a שְׂאֵת is raised, like the look of shade, which stands higher than the look of the sun, and deep is like the look of the sun, which lies lower than the look of shade, while ספחת is something secondary, as it says, סְפָחֵנִי נא אל אחת הכהנות (Shmuel I 2:36), attach me, please, to one of the priestly posts.

To incite and to entice; and a second sense, ruin and desolation.

Inciting and enticing

(Bereishis 3:13), the serpent enticed me, and (Melachim II 18:29), let not Chizkiyahu entice you. All of these, he says, mean inciting and enticing.

Ruin

The verb is לַהְשׁוֹת גַּלִּים נִצִּים (Melachim II 19:25), to lay waste into heaps of ruin. Some accurate books point it otherwise, and on that reading it would be from the root שָׁאָה, its regular form לְהַשְׁאוֹת, as it is written in its place (Yeshayahu 37:26). The nouns: הַשֵּׁאת וְהַשָּֽׁבֶר (Eichah 3:47), the ruin and the breaking; הִפַּלְתָּם לְמַשּׁוּאֽוֹת (Tehillim 73:18), You cast them down into ruins; and (Mishlei 26:26), hatred is covered over in ruin. Their sense, he says, is ruin and desolation.

Radak’s root

ק-ד-ש

To be holy, and to make holy; also, to become forbidden, as holy things are. A second sense is designating, as in appointing a fast or a war.

Holier than you

(Yeshayahu 65:5), do not come near me, for קְדַשְׁתִּיךָ, which means קדשתי ממך, I am holier than you.

Forbidden, as holy things are

(Devarim 22:9), lest the full yield of the seed תקדש, which he glosses: lest it become forbidden in benefit, as kodesh is. So Chazal said (Kiddushin 56b): from where do we know that kilayim of the vineyard are forbidden in benefit? It says there ואיש כי יקדיש את ביתו קדש, and when a man consecrates his house as holy, and it says here פן תקדש; as there it is forbidden in benefit, so here.

What Chaggai asked the kohanim

וְאֶל־כָּל־מַֽאֲכָל הֲיִקְדָּשׁ (Chaggai 2:12), or any food, היקדש: he glosses it היטמא, will it become tamei, that is, forbidden by its tumah as kodesh is forbidden. Chaggai was putting the laws of tumah to the kohanim, which they may have forgotten in the galus. His question was whether the food that stands fourth in tumah is tamei, the food alone, since he says היקדש, in the singular, and not היקדשו, in the plural; and they said no. Some of Chazal hold (Pesachim 17a) that the kohanim erred in this answer, a fourth degree being tamei in kodesh, though to the other question, of one made tamei by a corpse, they answered rightly. On this view, as Radak explains it, they knew a third degree in kodesh to be tamei but not a fourth, and in that they erred; that is why the navi answered them וַֽאֲשֶׁר יַקְרִיבוּ שָׁם טָמֵא הֽוּא, and what they offer there is tamei. Others of Chazal hold that they erred in neither; others, that Chaggai first asked them about a fifth degree in kodesh, and they rightly answered that it is not tamei; others, that he asked them before the decree on a fourth degree in kodesh. On the view that they did not err, Radak explains the navi's answer: though they know the laws of tumah and taharah, all that they offer is as though tamei, since they are slack in building the Beis. The whole parsha, he holds, bears out that they did not err, since throughout it the navi rebukes them over nothing but the Beis.

What touches holy things

(Vayikra 6:20), whatever touches its flesh becomes holy: food that touches the flesh of the chatas and absorbs from it becomes holy as it is. If the chatas is pasul, by piggul or some other disqualification, what touches it is pasul; if it is fit, what touches it is eaten by the stricter of the two. So shelamim flesh slaughtered the day before that touched a chatas slaughtered today is eaten that day only, by the law of shelamim, which are eaten for two days and one night, and not that night as the chatas is; and where both were slaughtered today, the shelamim flesh is eaten by the law of the chatas, that day and night only, and not the next day as other shelamim. (Shemos 29:37), whatever touches the mizbeach becomes holy: even a korban already pasul that has gone up on the mizbeach is made fit by it, and once it has gone up it does not come down; and that is where it was fit for the mizbeach to begin with and became pasul only by one of the things that disqualify a korban. So too כָּל־הַנֹּגֵעַ בָּהֶם יִקְדָּֽשׁ (Shemos 30:29), whatever touches them becomes holy, said of the klei shareis: whatever has entered one is holy with kedushas haguf, so as to be made pasul by any of the things that disqualify what has kedushas haguf, and it cannot be redeemed to go out to chullin.

The sanctuary, and the palace

(Shemos 25:8), and they shall make Me a sanctuary: the house of holiness is called מִקְדָּשׁ. A king's palace is called so as well, since it is like a mikdash, where none enter but those known there: (Amos 7:13), for it is a king's mikdash. (Yechezkel 11:16), and I have been to them a little mikdash, is in the way of מִגְדַּל־עֹז שֵׁם י"י (Mishlei 18:10), the name of Hashem is a tower of strength: they are secure in Him a little while they are in galus.

Two readings of וְהָיָה לְמִקְדָּשׁ

Some read וְהָיָה לְמִקְדָּשׁ (Yeshayahu 8:14), and He shall be for a mikdash, from this sense, that is, a place a man goes to be secure. On that reading לִשְׁנֵי בָתֵּי יִשְׂרָאֵל, for the two houses of Yisrael, is to the one for good and to the other for ill, since Shevna and his party had made peace with the king of Ashur and Chizkiyahu and his party had not. It can also be read as designation, a designation of punishment, a stumbling block set before them, as (Yechezkel 3:20), and I shall set a stumbling block before him; the two houses are then Pekach ben Remalyahu and Shevna with his party, both of whom wanted the kingdom of Beis David to fall.

Making holy, and consecrating

(Yechezkel 44:19), and they shall not make the people holy with their garments: that the kohanim not make them holy by touching them in the bigdei kehunah, since if the people touched their garments they would seem to be holy like them. So too Yonasan renders it, וְלָא יִתְעָרְבוּן עִם עַמָא בִּלְבוּשֵׁיהוֹן, and they shall not mingle with the people in their garments. (Devarim 15:19), the male you shall consecrate: though it is holy from the womb, one must say, it is holy as a bechor. (Vayikra 27:26), no man shall consecrate it: he may not consecrate it for another korban. (Yeshayahu 29:23), and they shall hallow the Holy One of Yaakov: they shall give Him holiness in their praise.

Appointing, and what is appointed

(Yoel 1:14), appoint a fast, call an assembly, and (Yirmiyahu 6:4), appoint war against her: these and all like them are the sense of designating. (Shmuel I 16:5) are listed with these, but he holds it right to take them from the first sense, holiness. כְּלֵיל הִתְקַדֶּשׁ־חָג then means that the night on which Sancheriv's army dies will be a joy to you like the night on which the festival is hallowed, the night of Pesach, and הִתְקַדְּשׁוּ וּבָאתֶם is make yourselves holy and come. The קָדֵשׁ and the קְדֵשָׁה, as in לֹא־תִֽהְיֶה קְדֵשָׁה (Devarim 23:18), there shall be no קדשה, are all of them those designated for lying with.
