honor
At a glance
In short
Kavod is honor, and its root also means heavy. Yakar is precious as an adjective and esteem or preciousness as a noun; by context it means "rare" (Shmuel I 3:1), "costly" (Tehillim 116:15) or "dear" (Yirmiyahu 31:19). For Rabbi Pappenheim the yakar thing is one that makes an impact, and the rare thing makes the greater impact. In Megillas Esther the noun yikar is "esteem" or "honor". The authorities split on which of the two is inherent. Malbim gives that to kavod, as with a talmid chacham, and makes yakar an importance that comes from rarity; Rabbi Avraham Vilner gives it to yakar and makes kavod one's standing relative to others. Rabbi Klein says this puts us back at square one.
Distinctions
Kavod (כבוד)
Root כ-ב-ד, which also gives "heavy" and "liver" (kaved).
- Rabbi Klein takes weight, value and honor as one metaphor: the substantial thing is the one that commands respect.
- Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh of Carpentras (Aholei Yehudah): the liver distributes nourishment to each limb according to its need, an honorable form of division; or, since the liver is the seat of anger (Berachos 60b) and anger mostly results from slighted honor, the organ and the concept share a root.
- Rabbi Pappenheim (introduction to Yerios Shlomo) speculates that כ-ב-ד fuses כ-ב (extinguishing) and ב-ד (aloneness) but never explains it; Rabbi Klein tentatively posits that honor, as a social construct, perhaps extinguishes or diminishes individuality in some ways.
Rabbinic l'chabed also means to sweep or clean, and in contemporary usage kibbud kal is light refreshments, both ways of honoring a guest.
- Malbim (Sefer HaCarmel, Yair Ohr): kavod is owed to a thing for its own inherent properties, the sage who earned his wisdom.
- Rabbi Avraham Vilner (Be'er Avraham to Esther 1:4) says the reverse: kavod is one's importance relative to others.
Yakar (יקר)
Root י-ק-ר: precious, expensive, honorable.
- Rabbi Eliyahu HaBachur (Sefer HaTishbi): whatever is precious becomes expensive. Indeed, by the law of supply and demand, the rarer a thing the higher its price.
- Rabbi Pappenheim, explaining the initial yud as radical, traces it to ק-ר, a strong impact from great weight or speed: the yakar thing makes an impact by its mere mention, as a precious gem (Yechezkel 27:22); the rare thing (prophecy in Shmuel's youth, Shmuel I 3:1) impresses more than the common one; the costly thing is costly because esteemed or scarce, so "the death of His pious ones is yakar in Hashem's eyes" (Tehillim 116:15) means He is loath to let them die without cause.
- Malbim splits Rabbi Pappenheim's two senses between the two words: yakar is primarily "rare", importance that comes from circumstance, from having few equals (gems and precious metals might be examples), not from inherent worth.
- Rabbi Avraham Vilner, the Vilna Gaon's son, writes the exact opposite of Malbim: yakar is inherent value needing no comparison, and kavod is one's standing over against others.
Rabbi Klein's own verdict on the pair is that this puts us back at square one. In Esther the noun yikar is excellence, esteem, honorableness: Achashverosh's display (1:4), wives giving yikar to husbands (1:20), the yikar due Mordechai (6:3, 6:6), and the Jews' yikar at the resolution (8:16).
The Aramaic question
Rabbi Eliyahu HaBachur (Meturgeman): Targum tends to render כ-ב-ד, both "heavy" (Shemos 4:10, 7:14; Shmuel II 14:26) and "honor" (Shemos 20:11; Shmuel I 2:29; Yeshayahu 43:23), with Aramaic י-ק-ר; so one simple line, which Rabbi Klein raises as a possibility, might be that yakar is kavod in Aramaic and the difference is linguistic, not semantic. He himself names the problem with the suggestion: י-ק-ר declines many times in Tanach, in stretches written in Hebrew, which makes it hard to say yakar is Aramaic only. In defense of the suggestion he points to a rabbinic tradition that treats yakar as quintessentially Aramaic: Megillah 9a proves there is Aramaic in Esther from yikar (1:20), and Sanhedrin 38b proves Adam spoke Aramaic from יקרו in Tehillim 139:17, which commentaries read as the Aramaic word for "honorable" standing in for the Hebrew kavod (Yad Ramah to Sanhedrin 38b, Maharsha to Bava Basra 75b, Aruch L'Ner to Sanhedrin 38b). Rabbi Uziel (glosses to Megillah 9a) objects to that reading of Sanhedrin: yakar exists in Hebrew too, where it means "precious." Yad Ramah himself offers an alternative elucidation of the sugya, that the Gemara's proof was from re'echa, "Your thoughts," which he takes as a cognate of the Aramaic ra'ayon, "idea."
Why the Amora chose 1:20 and not 1:4, where yikar already appears:
- Rabbi Baruch HaLevi Epstein (Safah LaNe'emanim pp. 34-35), because one loanword proves nothing and only several foreign words in a single sentence show that a text "uses" the other language.
- Rabbi Nathansohn (Beis Shaul to Yadayim 4:5), because the Gemara wanted a word inflected in Hebrew fashion as well as Aramaic in etymology (see also Rabbi Naftali Maskileison, Miskenos Naftali to Yadayim 4:5); the question is also handled by Rabbi Efrayim Zalman Margulies (Beis Efrayim, Orach Chaim 70), Sfas Emes to Megillah 9a, Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Chajes in his glosses to Megillah 9a and Sanhedrin 38b, and Rabbi Eliezer Harstik (Raglei Mevasser to Sefer HaTishbi).
On names: several medieval rabbanim were called Rabbeinu Yakar or Rabbeinu Yakir (Tosafos to Eruvin 40b, Avodah Zarah 68a, Chullin 47a), including the father of Rabbi Yaakov bar Yakar, Rashi's rebbi, and the father of Rabbi Yehuda ben Yakar, Ramban's. Scholars have argued that Yakar/Yakir was not a given name at all but a nickname for men named Efrayim, on הבן יקיר לי אפרים (Yirmiyahu 31:19); Rabbi Dr. Ephraim Kanarfogel wrote to Rabbi Klein privately that this does not hold across the board. There is a feminine counterpart, Yakirah. The punning is not unique: Rashi's grandson Rabbi Yaakov ben Meir was called Rabbeinu Tam for ish tam (Bereishis 25:27), and Rabbeinu Porat was really named Yosef, for ben poras Yosef (Bereishis 49:22).
Radak on these roots
Sefer HaShorashim
י-ק-ר
To be precious and honoured; the word serves for weight as well as honour, so אֲבָנִים יְקָרוֹת are heavy stones. The noun is יְקָר, honour.
Precious, and out of reach
וְלִי מַה־יָּקְרוּ רֵעֶיךָ אֵל (Tehillim 139:17), and to me how precious are Your thoughts, O Kel: they are precious, and too great to be grasped. אֲשֶׁר יָקַרְתִּי מֵעֲלֵיהֶם (Zecharyah 11:13) he reads as, I was precious in myself and drew away from them, because I was not precious in their eyes.
The choicest of the lambs
כִּיקַר כָּרִים (Tehillim 37:20) means like the choicest of the lambs, which is the fat that was consumed on the altar.
Where the vowels are disputed
מַה־יָּקָר חַסְדְּךָ אֱלֹהִים (Tehillim 36:8), how precious is Your kindness, Elokim: Rabbi Yehudah recorded יָּקָר as a past verb, and perhaps his copy had the kuf with a patach; in our books it is all kamatz, so it is rightly an adjective. Of וְאֶת־יְקָר תִּפְאֶרֶת גְּדוּלָּתוֹ (Esther 1:4), and the honour of the glory of his greatness, Rabbi Yehudah wrote that the word is patach and Rabbi Yonah that it is kamatz, and Radak found it kamatz in some of the careful books and patach in others. It may be a construct though kamatz, as כְּתָב, writing, is kamatz whether joined or not; or it may be absolute, the vav of וְאֶת serving twice, the sense being ואת יקר ותפארת גדולתו, the honour and the glory of his greatness.
Of weight as of honour
אֲבָנִים יְקָרוֹת לְיַסֵּד הַבָּיִת (Melachim I 5:31), heavy stones to lay the foundation of the house, for יְקָרוֹת here means heavy: as a word is used in the sense of כבדות, weight, and in the sense of כבוד, honour, so יקר is used in both senses, for they are alike in sense.
The bright light
לֹא־יִהְיֶה אוֹר יְקָרוֹת (Zecharyah 14:6), there shall not be the light of יְקָרוֹת, which is the clear light, nor the light of קפאון, which is the thick light, but something between, as it says, לֹא־יוֹם וְלֹא־לָיְלָה (Zecharyah 14:7), neither day nor night. It is a figure for the salvation and for the troubles that will come at its start. Targum Yonasan renders it, there will be no light but cold and ice.
Two readings of one word
בְּנוֹת מְלָכִים בִּיקְּרוֹתֶיךָ (Tehillim 45:10), kings' daughters among your honoured ones. So Ben Naftali reads it, and Radak gives two accounts of the dagesh: the first letter of the root is swallowed in the dagesh of the kuf though it is written; or the dagesh is for grace in reading, and the yud rests and its vowel is thrown back onto the servile beis, the proper form being בְּיִקְּרוֹתֶיךָ. Ben Asher reads the beis with a sheva and the yud with a chirik, as is proper. The word is an adjective: among your honoured women were kings' daughters.
כ-ב-ד
Heaviness, and with it burden, great numbers and wealth, since abundance is heaviness. Close to it, כָּבוֹד, honour, which also names the soul; הַכָּבֵד, the liver.
Heavy, and what heaviness does
כָּבְדָה מְאֹד יַד הָאֱלֹהִים שָׁם (Shmuel I 5:11), the hand of Hashem was heavy there; וַיִּכְבַּד לֵב פַּרְעֹה (Shemos 9:7), Paroh's heart grew heavy; וְעֵינֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל כָּבְדוּ מִזֹּקֶן (Bereishis 48:10), his eyes were dim with age. A man is כָּבֵד in cattle, silver and gold (Bereishis 13:2), heavy with wealth. Twice the adjective is great: כְּצֵל סֶֽלַע־ כָּבֵד (Yeshayahu 32:2), like the shade of a great rock, is a large rock with a large shade, in which those who walk in a weary land find rest, and עַמְּךָ הַכָּבֵד הַזֶּֽה (Melachim I 3:9), this great people of Yours, is הגדול, the great. וְאֶת־ הַכְּבוּדָּה לִפְנֵיהֶֽם (Shoftim 18:21), and the goods before them, means their cattle and the rest of their wealth.
Heavy as many
יִכְבְּדוּ בָנָיו וְלֹא יֵדָע (Iyov 14:21), his sons grow many, or come to great and heavy wealth, and he does not know it; he reads it so because its opposite in the same pasuk is וְיִצְעֲרוּ, and they are made small. So too וְהִכְבַּדְתִּים וְלֹא יִצְעָרוּ (Yirmiyahu 30:19), I will make them heavy and they will not be made small, which he glosses as their having great and heavy wealth. וּנְשָֽׂאֲךָ לִבְּךָ לְהַכְבִּיד (Divrei HaYamim II 25:19), and your heart has lifted you up to multiply, is to multiply war still further. He holds all of it one sense, for the abundance of anything is its heaviness.
A burden on someone
לְמַעַן שְׁמִי יִכְבַּד (Yeshayahu 66:5), for the sake of my name Hashem is heavy, he reads as what your brothers who hate you say, meaning that His words weigh heavy on us and are a burden to us; and He will be seen and revealed in your joy, and they will be ashamed. So too וְלֹא נִכְבַּד עָלֶיךָ (Shmuel II 13:25), we will not be a load and a burden on you, and תִּכְבַּד הָעֲבֹדָה עַל־הָאֲנָשִׁים (Shemos 5:9), let the work lie heavy on the men.
Swarming, or sweeping
הִתְכַּבֵּד כַּיֶּלֶק (Nachum 3:15) he takes as multiplying like the locust. Others read it as sweeping away, in the sense of וְטֵאטֵאתִיהָ (Yeshayahu 14:23), I will sweep her, and from Chazal's מכבדין בין המטות (Beitzah 22b), they sweep between the couches, and מכבדות של תמרה (Sukkah 13b), palm sweepers, these being the יעים, with which the house is swept; and they read כָּבֹד מִכֹּל כְּלִי חֶמְדָּה (Nachum 2:10) the same way, a sweeping out of every precious vessel.
Honour
כִּֽי־יָבֹא דְבָרְיךָ [דְבָרְךָ] וְכִבַּדְנֽוּךָ (Shoftim 13:17), when your word comes we will honour you, he reads as: when the thing you announced to us comes true we will honour you, and therefore tell us your name. Some explain it as: if we know your name, then when your word and your affairs come to us we will honour you. כִּי־מְכַבְּדַי אֲכַבֵּד וּבֹזַי יֵקָלּוּ (Shmuel I 2:30), those who honour Me I honour and those who scorn Me are made light. נִכְבָּדוֹת מְדֻבָּר בָּךְ (Tehillim 87:3), honoured things are spoken of you, is honoured virtues and qualities spoken of you, the noun they describe being left unsaid. Giving כָּבוֹד to Hashem (Yirmiyahu 13:16) he reads as honouring Him with praise and with confessing one's sins before Him. In וּבְהֵיכָלוֹ כֻּלּוֹ אֹמֵר כָּבֽוֹד (Tehillim 29:9), and in His palace all of it says praise, כָּבוֹד is praise and hymn, for that is the honour given to the Creator, blessed be He. וְאַחַר כָּבוֹד תִּקָּחֵֽנִי (Tehillim 73:24), and after, You will take me in honour: the pasuk first says בעצתך תנחני, You guide me with Your counsel, that is, all the days of my life, and after that You will take me in honour; or it says You will take me to honour. אַחַר כָּבוֹד שְׁלָחַנִי (Zecharyah 2:12), after, for honour He sent me, is that after all these prophecies He sent me for honour and greatness, for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye.
The soul, and the liver
The higher soul is called כָּבוֹד because it is the honour and worth of the body, שָׂמַח לִבִּי וַיָּגֶל כְּבוֹדִי (Tehillim 16:9), my heart is glad and my soul rejoices. וּכְבוֹדִי לֶעָפָר יַשְׁכֵּן סֶלָה (Tehillim 7:6), and let him make my soul dwell in the dust, selah, he takes as a figure, since the soul does not dwell in dust, like דָּבְקָה לֶעָפָר נַפְשִׁי (Tehillim 119:25), my soul cleaves to the dust. At the end stands the organ, יֹתֶרֶת הַכָּבֵד (Vayikra 8:16), the lobe of the liver, which he calls known.
